where do you store your treasures?
I have a confession. I love purses! Simply stated and simply put. It’s one of my weaknesses. Give me a good purse or handbag, and I am a happy little camper over here.
I recently was feeling a sense of guilt for how many purses and handbags I had in my closet. So, I had to call in reinforcements to help me have a clear mind in deciding which stay and which go. It was way more difficult than I imagined it would be. Each bag was unique and different in its own way, and each one seemed to be pleading its case with me as I held it up, put it on my shoulder, and contemplated my decision.
Luke 12:33-34 tells us to sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and not moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
What does a purse look like that will never wear out?
The purpose of a purse is to carry our things, to hold our things, our treasures that we need with us and the most important when leaving the house - wallet, lipstick, keys, floss, hand cream, . . .
I recently played Scattergories and the letter rolled was T and the question was, “something in your purse right now.” I wrote down tissue. Although, I honestly could have come up with things to cover the entire alphabet given the size of my purse that night. Hey, I’m just being real!
But the worst is when you go to the restroom and there is no hook for your purse and you try to hold it on top of your feet while using the bathroom. It’s tricky. Or at a restaurant and it won’t hang well on your chair. I have seen women hold purses in their laps while eating, hold them on top of their feet, in between their legs, so they don’t have to put them on the dirty floor. We cherish and take good care of our purses don’t we ladies!
In the bible when it says to carry a purse that will not wear out - can you imagine? I would also add a purse that never goes out of style. An investment piece is what I have heard the designer purses called. An investment.
So what are You investing in? What is in Your purse? What are You focused on? Are they things that the thieves and moths can destroy?
The focus of our hearts will be what we value as our true treasure. My focus can easily become distorted and distracted but my prayer is that my focus will be on building God’s Kingdom, the thing that will never wear out or go out of style.
