wingman

Before any flight, I always find the wing of the plane and wink at my guardian angel. I have done it for years. (Thanks to a dear friend whose grandfather passed on the tradition) I have now passed this onto my children and any friends who travel with me. People often think that I am winking at them as I look out the window of the plane (sometimes frantically) trying to find the wing and wink before the plane takes off. I’ve gotten a few weird looks, some return winks (from Steve, mainly) and some looks of concern. But it reminds me that God is with me, He sees me, and He is with me. When I have feelings of anxiousness creep in thinking about being 10,000 plus feet in the air, soaring above land, this gives me peace and confidence that His love takes care of my fear.

You have most likely heard the saying, “You’re my Wingman. My right hand person.” Having a “wingman” is fantastic. It creates a sense of confidence, security and purpose. If you’re someone’s wingman (or wingwoman), you know that you are someone that is being trusted, depended upon, relied on and, well, expected to do your job when called upon.

Did you know that Jesus is this to us? He is someone that can be trusted, depended upon, relied on and looked to. We know that God holds us. Psalms 139 tells us that God goes before us, behind us. . . He is always with us. We can never escape from His presence.

Today, who are you relying on to be your “wingman”? I’ve had several “wing(wo)men” in my life. God has brought people in and out of my life at different seasons. But the best, most reliable, dependable, consistent wingman in my life has been and continues to be Jesus. I know that He is with me. He is faithful, dependable, reliable, and His love and grace never wavers.

So, the next time you fly, find the wing of the plane and give a little wink. You never know what God will speak to your heart and remind you of. Who knows, you might spend your time in the air, talking to Jesus as He parts the clouds for a smooth and steady flight.
