commutes & community.

As I was driving one morning to the Pearl House office, I couldn’t help but notice the vehicle in front of me. It was a minivan, so I automatically assumed it was a woman, specifically a mom, with lots of kiddos. Side bar: if you drive a minivan and do not have children, please forgive me for stereotyping your vehicle.

But, I wasn’t wrong. When I got closer to the vehicle, there was a sticker on the back right hand bottom corner that said, “honk, if a kid falls out!” I immediately started laughing out loud in my car! And I pictured this mom, doing the best she can, but also there’s a (not so) subtle cry for help.

This is how we should be living our lives and in community with one another. There will be times when we see our loved ones, friends, coworkers, children, even spouses struggle. Life is hard and we need each other. Sometimes we fall out of line, we fall out of relationships, we fall away from God, and we fall away from even being motivated to do life well. This is when we need that “honk!” Basically, when we “honk”, we are bringing attention to the matter at hand. When we “honk”, we are also helping others to get back up, dust themselves off, and keep going. The Bible tells us that we are to spur each other on to good works. (Hebrews 10:24) This basically means that we are to encourage one another, to help lighten the load for one another, to pray for each other, to be a listening ear, and to be there for one another. You might have someone in your life right now that is laying on their horn because they love you. There might be people in your life that need you to “honk”. My prayer for you is that God will bring people to mind, that He will give you the courage to do the loving and wise and bold thing, and “honk” if necessary. Even if it’s me you’re thinking at! Love you all!
